Kvarken Ports has invested 27 million SEK in a new mobile crane. The Terex Gottwald GHMK 6507, with a lifting capacity of 125 tons, has been in use since the beginning of June.
We now have two mobile cranes, in the port of Umeå, adapted for container handling, with lifting capacities of 125 respectively 100 tons. This results in a faster and more efficient handling and enables, in some cases, tandem lifts up to 225 tons. The new crane has been in use for two weeks and all has gone according to the plan. ”We are very pleased with the new investment. Compared to our Gottwald 6407 the new crane is somewhat faster, lifts 25 % more and has a lower noise level. The crane is diesel-electric and is prepared for future electric drive. Due to the fact that we have two mobile cranes we have doubled the amount of lifts per hour and secured an effective loading and discharging process.”, says Stefan Rehn, Kvarken Ports’ traffic manager in Umeå.
“We are very happy with the response we have received from Kvarken Ports, as we increase the container volumes in Umeå. The new crane is a necessity in order to serve incoming container vessels with higher efficiency and increased capacity is needed to ensure a shorter time in port for the vessels”, says Margaretha Gustafsson, SCA Logistics’ Terminal Manager in Umeå.
The container volumes have increased considerably in Umeå, reaching the new record 25 000 TEU:s in 2015 and we are preparing for a 100% volume growth within the next years. ”There is a big potential in project transports and in the increase in container traffic. With this investment we guarantee effective logistical solutions for the region´s industry and commerce”, states Matti Esko, MD at Kvarken Ports Ltd.
